Shipping

The estimated shipping/handling rates shown below, and in your shopping cart, are based on the merchandise total of your order.  We use estimates because it is not possible for us to know the exact shipping charge for your order until we know the total weight of your order, number of boxes needed to ship your order, and your address. Once your order has been filled, we charge the published shipping rate, plus a handling charge of $3. The handling charge is based on the materials used to pack your order properly to ensure it arrives at its destination undamaged. For many of our customers, the actual shipping/handling charge is less than the estimate. However, because we also ship oversized and liquid products, the actual shipping/handling may be more in some cases. We will notify you before shipping your order if the actual shipping/handling turns out to be substantially more than the estimate.

The receipt, enclosed with your order, will show the actual shipping/handling that was charged to your credit card.

Leather Questions

I have some questions about a project I’m working on. Is there anyone that can help me?

You can call the Tandy Leather Factory store nearest you. The store manager or sales associate will work with you, one on one, to ensure that you have the confidence to complete your leathercraft project.

How do I purchase leather?

The most economical way to buy leather is to purchase it exactly as it comes from the tannery. In this form, the leather is usually priced by the square foot and sold as a complete hide. Leather comes from the tanneries in various shapes and sizes depending on its intended use and the animal from which it came. Large animal hides are usually cut into smaller sections (sides, shoulders, bellies. etc.) at the tannery. The skins of smaller animals, calves, goats, pigs, and reptiles are sold in their original shape. For more info, read our Leather Pricing page.

How do I dye my auto and home upholstery?

The dyes, antique stains, and finishes we sell are not intended for staining, dyeing or the refinishing of leather automobile interiors, leather furniture, leather garments, or any other finished leather articles. They are strictly designed to use on vegetable tanned tooling leather. Please consult your local upholsterer or the business in which you purchased the item in question.

What kind of leather should I use for my leathercraft project?

Generally speaking, soft pliable projects will be constructed with a type of chrome tanned garment leather. Any project that will have tooling and design work on it will need to be constructed with vegetable tanned tooling leather. For additional assistance please contact the Tandy Leather Factory store nearest you.

What is meant when leather is referred to in "ounces"?

Leather thickness is usually measured in terms of ounces. One ounce equals 1/64" in thickness. Thus, a weight of 7 to 8 oz. means the leather is 7/64" to 8/64" in thickness, or approximately 1/8" thick. The thickness of leather varies to some extent throughout the hide. This is why leathers are usually shown with a range of thickness such as 4 to 5 oz., or 6 to 7 oz. As a comparison, a quarter (coin) is equal to a 4 oz. thickness.

What can I use to clean and condition my leather goods?

When choosing leather-care products, it is important to know whether the product is a cleaner or a conditioner. Leather cleaners contain ingredients that lift and remove dirt without driving it into the leather fibers. By contrast, leather conditioners contain ingredients that penetrate between leather fibers to lubricate them and keep them supple. Many new leathers have a naked or suede finish, which may absorb the cleaner or conditioner differently than leather with a normal, smooth finish. Note: Cleaners and conditioners are not intended for use on leathers with a suede or nubuck finish. Always test cleaners and conditioners on a small, inconspicuous area of your project.

What length rivet should I use on my project?

Rapid rivets work best when the stud protrudes from the pieces being riveted by less than 1/8". If the stud sticks out more than 1/8" it tends to bend when you set it and usually does not hold securely.

How can I keep my tooling leather from stretching or shrinking?

In order to reduce stretching/shrinking while working with your leather, try rubber cementing it onto a piece of hard cardboard. After you have completed your carving, peel the cardboard from the leather, not the leather from the cardboard.

How can I prevent dark marks from appearing on my tooling project?

Try using a plastic or ceramic bowl to hold your water instead of a metal one. Metal bowls can introduce impurities that may cause the water to create dark stains on your leather.

I have stamped and finished a belt. I would like to round the edges. How can this be accomplished?

When finishing the edge of a belt, first remove the sharp corner with an edge beveler. Then, apply gum tragacanth and rub briskly with a circle edge slicker. This will give you a round, finished edge.

Can I use an adhesive to glue leather together?

Yes, we suggest that you use a rubber cement when a temporary bond in needed. If you are looking for a more permanent bond, a contact type or non-toxic flexible cement is your best choice.

What is the difference between a dye and a stain?

Generally, a penetrating dye is used for the overall coverage of a project, while an antique stain is used to highlight a stamped or tooled project.
